So you’ve finally decided to remodel your house, or maybe your putting it up for sale. Perhaps, your son or daughter is returning from college, or you’ve just come to the realization that you have more stuff than space to put it in. Whatever the reason, business or personal, short or long term, Self Storage has become a popular answer to space limitations. One popular misconception is that all self storage facilities are created equal. While a 10 x 10 metal box will appear similar from facility to facility, there are many things to consider prior to renting a self storage unit…and its not always about price.
Convenience is key. The assumption is you are storing these items because they are of value to you, therefore, you should store them in a location that is close to where you will be. Maybe its easy to access on the way to work, or right around the corner from your house, either way, make sure you don’t regret driving too far for the great deal.
Are your items safe and secure? A self storage facility’s efforts to secure your items should be evident. For example, at Storageworks (and many reputable facilities), we have a 24 hour accessible gate that allows access only through the use of a PIN. When an individual enters the facility, the “activity” is logged so we know who is coming and going. In addition, if you are storing inside of one of our Temperature controlled buildings you would have an additional “pin pad” for added security. A good storage facility will be monitored with security cameras as well. These cameras will be set to record 24/7. We will discuss security more in future blogs.
Finally, storing should be clean and easy. The storage facility should be well maintained and managed by a knowledgeable & friendly self storage team. A good storage consultant should not only answer your questions, but should help find the best sized unit in the best location to meet your needs.
